A Brief Look At Santa Monica's History

ImageA beautiful foundation was built in 1911 in Omaha, Nebraska. The a dream home that would someday be the foundation to women in the crisis of addiction. The foundation located at 130 North 39th Street displays a brick, three-story home with stained glass windows, boasting all original wood-work throughout. French doors and a grand staircase that leads all the way to the third floor.

Santa Monica was founded in 1972 to offer a caring, comprehensive support system to women with chemical dependency. Through the efforts of Sally Holmquist and Bill Crooks working together, plus with grant funding from John Kenefick, then President of Union Pacific Railroad, Santa Monica was able to open and begin serving women in the community with the first residential treatment program of its kind in Nebraska. The first two women clients moved into Santa Monica in December of 1972.

Since its founding, Santa Monica has grown substantially, with assistance from the community, a dedicated staff and board of directors who recognize the need for gender competent substance abuse programs for women.

Today, Santa Monica offers a residential program including individual and group counseling, 12-step meetings, life skills training and relapse prevention to help women cope with daily stresses without dependence on drugs or alcohol.
